Podcast: Danny McBride Talks YOUR HIGHNESS
“It was really a joke,” says screenwriter Danny McBride of how he and director David Gordon Green came up with the idea for their new movie, Your Highness. McBride co-wrote the script with his writing partner Ben Best. He also stars in the film along side a couple of Oscar-nominated actors like James Franco and Natalie Portman. Not too shabby. So, how does a guy who’s got a reputation as a pot-smoking cut-up manage to write, star and produce a big-budget action adventure like this? The truth is, he’s not that much of a cut-up. He’s actually a really smart guy who will totally nerd out when it comes to screenwriting. Our favorite kind! Script sat down with McBride to have a philosophical conversation on what it takes to write good comedy, fight big studio bosses and stay true to story. The absurd, silly and often raunchy comedian is really a writer at heart.

Shouldn’t your magazine pursue coverage of good screenwriters rather than ones who have written what many critics are describing as a movie that may be one of the worst of all times?
^^^^
I think hearing from the best and the worst is equally inspiring Kevin – plus it’s all in the eye of the beholder. I don’t think it’s going to win an Oscar, but the movie has been made and includes some pretty good actors, so they must be doing something right.
I thought this was an entertaining yet goofy story with the classic “Hero’s Journey” structure.
An Oscar contender? No. A sit back, have fun popcorn movie? Sure!
