The Scoggins Report: April 2013 Pitch Market Scorecard

April 2013
Pitch Market Scorecard

Unlike the situation in the spec market, the number of pitch purchases by the studios is basically on par with 2012 and 2011, thanks in large part to strong numbers in February.  What’s different this year is thedistribution:  Fox is way ahead of its 2012 pace (5 purchases so far this year, vs 1 in the same period in 2012); Universal is slightly up over last year’s impressive tally through April (7 vs 6); but Columbia, Paramountand Warner Bros. are all significantly off their 2012 numbers (1 pitch each, versus 6, 5 and 6, respectively).

Fortunately, DreamWorks has picked up some of the slack (3 vs 0), as have a handful of other studios, as you’ll see from the below grids.  Here are our favorite highlights about the pitch market since the last Scorecard, which went out just over a month ago, on March 11:

•     Collectively, buyers picked up 14 pitches over the past five weeks.  Universal led the pack, with four.

•     CAA has made a big surge, with 7 pitch sales since the last Scorecard.  They’re now tied with WME at 9 so far for the year.

•     Spec scripts have been selling a bit better than pitches lately, but total sales of each for the year remain even at 30.
