2012 Spec Market Scorecard
as of May 19, 2012
As we reported in last week’s Pitch Sales Scorecard, buyers have been snapping up original pitches and specs lately at a very healthy rate. That pace continued last week: As you’ll see from the below grids, 12 specs have sold since the last Spec Market Scorecard four weeks ago. Plus, May marks the third month in a row in which a third of the new specs that hit the market have sold.
All in, spec sales are slightly off 2011’s heady pace, but combined pitch and spec sales are up 8% over last year despite relatively low numbers for May so far. Here are our favorite highlights from the past four weeks:
• Three studios bought two specs each (Columbia Pictures, Fox and Warner Bros.), and Fox got on the board for the first time in 2012.
• WME added 3 notches to its belt (the agency has sold an amazing 17 out 18 specs it took out this year), and APA and Paradigm were close behind with two sales each.
• Anonymous Content sold two specs, and 8 other management companies made the list for the first time in 2012.
All-in, we’re in very good shape as we head into summer.
